Sustainable Breeding Program
A responsible wildlife facility participates in the breeding of the animals that they work with so as not to be consumers of wildlife resulting in the ongoing practice of collecting animals from the wild. Nurtured By Nature/ Animal Educators is always looking for ways to promote more sustainable practices.
It is our policy that animals in our care should be managed sustainably by responsible breeding projects or by supporting other facilities’ breeding projects. Case in point, there is a big demand for Three Banded Armadillos in zoos, but they are not commonly bred in these zoos. Recognizing this, Animal Educators set up a breeding program to meet this demand and slow wild caught importations and, as a result, has produced over 75 babies since 2011.
We have not seen Three Banded Armadillos imported into the United States since being able to successfully fulfill the need of zoos and educational facilities around the US. We hope to replicate this conservation success, and are currently working with sustainable breeding projects for sloth and several species of reptiles.
